PMI Premier Authorized Training Partner — Call 877-GET-PMP1

Ask a room full of project managers which PMI credentials they're aware of and you'll hear PMP every time, CAPM and PMI-ACP from most of them, and maybe PgMP from a few. The PMI-RMP rarely comes up — and that's a meaningful gap in how the profession thinks about specialization.

What the PMI-RMP Actually Certifies

The PMI Risk Management Professional credential validates your ability to assess and identify project risks, mitigate threats, and capitalize on opportunities. It's not a general PM credential — it's a specialist credential that signals you understand how to build and execute a risk management strategy, not just check the risk register box during planning.PMI designed it for experienced PMs who focus heavily on risk, program managers responsible for risk across multiple projects, and practitioners in industries where risk identification failures have catastrophic consequences: defense, construction, healthcare IT, financial services, and infrastructure.

Eligibility Requirements

To apply for the PMI-RMP you need:A secondary degree (high school diploma) with 4,500 hours of project risk management experience and 40 contact hours of PM education focused on risk, ORA four-year degree with 3,000 hours of project risk management experience and 30 contact hours of PM education focused on riskNote that this requires risk-specific experience hours, not general PM hours. If you've been managing risk registers, facilitating risk workshops, and running qualitative and quantitative analysis in your projects, you likely qualify without realizing it.

What It Pays

PMI's Earning Power salary survey shows PMI-RMP holders earn a meaningful premium over non-certified counterparts in risk-intensive industries. In the US, PMI-RMP holders in defense and government contracting, large-scale construction, and financial services consistently appear in the top quartile of PM compensation ranges. The credential is comparatively rare — there are roughly 5,000 active PMI-RMP holders globally versus over 1 million PMP holders — which means it stands out immediately on a resume in industries that value it.

Who Should Pursue It

The PMI-RMP makes the most sense if you already hold a PMP and want to differentiate in a risk-heavy industry or role. It's a strong complement to the PMP rather than a substitute — hiring managers in fields like aerospace, defense contracting, or infrastructure rarely see a PMP + PMI-RMP combination, which is exactly why it carries weight when they do.It's less compelling if your work doesn't involve meaningful risk identification and management, or if you're in an industry where risk is treated as a compliance checkbox rather than a project management discipline.
